THE TOWN OF ARCTIC STORIES
Barentsburg is a town of Arctic stories written by Dutch explorers, Pomors, Norwegian trappers, American and German merchants, adventurers, Soviet builders of communism, and Russian miners. Each era of the town growth was marked by the stories representing the spirit and soul of the Arctic. That is exactly why we invite you to visit Barentsburg. Some things are only present to our mind, the others are kept by the silent witnesses, e.g. traces of a whaling station located on the cape Finneset or a cannon on the cape Heer. There are also living or born-again stories as for example, a coal mine operating in the years since the Dutchmen or a kennel with various Arctic sled dog breeds.
